Harlyn Bay — a gentle, family beach
North-facing and sheltered, with forgiving waves, a friendly surf school and rockpools to explore — Harlyn is the easy, all-ages bay just a few miles from the park.
About the bay
The sheltered bay where Cornish beach days begin
Harlyn Bay is a wide, north-facing crescent of golden sand tucked into the coast near Padstow. Because the bay faces north and curves in on itself, it’s noticeably more sheltered than the open Atlantic beaches nearby — which means gentler, more forgiving waves and calmer water for paddling.
That combination has made Harlyn a long-standing favourite for families and first-time surfers. Harlyn Surf School, established here in 1994, runs lessons on the beach, and there are plenty of rockpools to comb through at low tide and soft dunes behind the sand — everything you need for a relaxed, all-ages day by the sea.

Surf & lessons
Perfect for a first surf
Harlyn’s sheltered aspect gives it gentler, more forgiving waves than the surrounding bays — which is exactly what you want when you’re learning. It’s widely regarded as one of the best beginner-friendly beaches on this stretch of coast.
The beach is home to Harlyn Surf School — one of Cornwall’s longest-running, established here in 1994 — so you can book a lesson, hire a board and wetsuit, and be standing up on the white water in a single morning. It’s an ideal place for children and adults to try surfing together for the first time.
Beginner & intermediate waves
Gentle, rolling surf that suits first-timers and improvers. Experienced surfers tend to head to the more exposed bays nearby for a bigger swell.
Harlyn Surf School on the sand
Lessons, board and wetsuit hire are available on the beach in season — perfect for a first lesson with the whole family.
Lifeguarded in season
RNLI lifeguards patrol the beach during the main season; always swim and surf between the red-and-yellow flags. Cover dates can vary year to year, so check the current patrol times before you set out.

Getting there
Just a few miles from your pitch
Harlyn Bay sits about three miles from Atlantic Bays — a short drive of roughly ten minutes through the St Merryn lanes. It makes an easy first stop on a Seven Bays beach-hopping day, with Constantine, Treyarnon and the others all close by along the same stretch of coast.
Keen walkers can also reach the bay along the South West Coast Path, which threads between the beaches over the clifftops — leave the car behind and walk in from a neighbouring bay.
